The Nursing Education Certificate Program (14 credits) at the University of Detroit Mercy provides qualified nurses with the opportunity to learn the principles and practice of education for the preparation of individuals for nursing careers.

The certificate program includes learning in the areas of curriculum development and evaluation, course design, teaching/learning methodologies, and assessment of student learning, in classroom and clinical settings. Nurses considering teaching in a nursing education program will benefit from studying the art and science of education, which is designed to promote the ability of nurses to facilitate others in learning the art and science of nursing.

Objectives

  1. Exemplify various teaching/learning strategies and approaches appropriate for classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings.
  2. Integrate facilitation of learner development and formation as nurses into personal growth as an educator.
  3. Explain the processes of curricular design and evaluation of program outcomes.
  4. Design and implement curriculum development and evaluation projects.
  5. Develop a set of resources and a plan for ongoing self-development as an educator.
  6. Differentiate the teaching, scholarship, and service roles of the educator.

Dr. Saunders has been the Program Coordinator for the Adult Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist (AGCNS) program since 2010. She has over 20 years of experience as a certified Adult Clinical Nurse Specialist. Dr. Saunders is committed to growing the numbers of AGCNSs nationwide and showcasing the impact of the CNS role. She actively speaks on practice issues affecting nursing and remains involved in legislative processes at the state and national level. She is an active member of the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists. Besides teaching in the AGCNS program, Dr. Saunders teaches an interprofessional course in health policy. Her research interests are family caregiving, CNS role and methods in on-line learning. Dr. Saunders is certified by the Association of College and University Educators in effective teaching practices in higher education.

Admissions Criteria

  1. A baccalaureate degree in nursing or another field.
  2. A minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.75.
  3. A minimum of 2,000 hours as a registered nurse in the State of Michigan.
  4. An unencumbered license to practice as a registered nurse.
  5. Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
  6. One letter of professional recommendation from someone in a supervisory capacity.
  7. An autobiographical statement of personal goals and objectives.
  8. An interview with graduate faculty.
