Master of Arts

In today’s dynamic and changing world, advanced leadership skills are essential for personal development to accelerate your career and create strong communities and organizations. University of Detroit Mercy’s new Master of Arts in Leadership, available in fall 2024, offers expertise and flexibility to empower students as they develop the qualities of a transformative servant leader in the Jesuit and Mercy traditions.

Housed in the College of Liberal Arts & Education, this 10 course, 30 credit hour interdisciplinary program provides a rigorous and comprehensive curriculum integrating the Detroit Mercy Social Change Model of Leadership. Students will master competencies that reflect their emerging sense of self as leader, demonstrate their effectiveness in leading groups and?practice successful engagement in the community.

This master’s program is available completely online via synchronous and asynchronous courses that create convenience and flexibility for busy professionals looking to succeed as leaders in any field. Courses will be taught using highly interactive teaching methodologies including coaching, simulations, community-based projects, case studies, practical applications, active learning, design thinking and interactive assessments. In addition, instructors will honor the leadership experiences and wisdom that each student already brings with them.

The program collaborates with Detroit Mercy’s Institute for Leadership and Service to provide unique opportunities for students to engage in real-life leadership development, conduct research and advance the leadership capacity of University stakeholders.

Graduates of this program will incorporate the Detroit Mercy Social Change Model values of self-knowledge, character, integrity, collaboration, diversity, social justice and service as they develop into leaders who make informed, effective decisions based on social change for the common good.

Students enrolled in this program must successfully complete the required 10 courses representing 30 credit hours. This program is available exclusively as an online course of study. Most students will take two courses during each semester to achieve the master’s in a timely manner. Other options can be discussed with your advisor.

Admissions Criteria

Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college and must have demonstrated intellectual competence for graduate study. Selection is based on such factors as previous academic records (expected 3.0 GPA) and/or relevant experience.

Note: Applicants do not need to submit GRE scores as part of the application requirements. If scores are submitted they will be reviewed as part of the admission review process.
