Health Services Administration

Students who have completed a bachelor's degree may elect to complete this five-course certificate to improve their ability to understand and manage within the U.S. health care system. Course content is specific to the field of health care delivery. Students will learn management strategies, health policy, accounting and financial management and approaches to quality improvement.

HSA 5001 Theory and Practice of Health Services Management (2 credits)

HSA 5005 Career Management for Health Services Administrators (1 credit)

HSA 5010 Accounting Principles for Health Services Professionals (3 credits)

HSA 5020 Financial Management of Health Services (3 credits)

HLH 5700 Health Care Delivery and Policy Issues (3 credits)

HSA 5780 Quality Improvement in Health Care Organizations (3 credits)

Admissions Criteria

Admission Criteria:

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited university or college.

2. A minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better (on a 4.0 scale). Probationary admission may be granted to students whose GPA is less than a 3.0 on a case-by-case basis.

3. Official transcripts sent directly from all colleges and universities attended.

4. One unique letter of professional recommendation from someone in a supervisory capacity. Recommendation letter should be on the recommender's employer's letterhead sent directly by the recommender from their professional (not personal) email address either to the health services administration administrator or through the Detroit Mercy application portal.

5. A brief (1-2 pages) essay* explaining why you are interested in pursuing the HSA Certificate program at University of Detroit Mercy: a. how your professional and/or personal experience led to your choice of a career in health administration at UDM b. what your professional goals are upon graduation from the program/ how you plan to use the HSA Certificate upon graduation

6. For international students: TOEFL internet-based score of 83, and LELTS minimum overall band score of 6.5 or Duolingo score of 120.
